The scene
A series of 6 vertical short-form ads for nightlife and lifestyle brands, designed for Instagram Reels and TikTok. Each spot needed to feel raw and energetic while maintaining premium production quality -- a difficult balance in the fast-moving world of short-form content.
The challenge
Shooting vertical in chaotic nighttime environments with unpredictable lighting and fast-moving subjects. Every shot had to work within a 9:16 frame while maintaining cinematic depth and composition that typically relies on horizontal space.
The process
Each location was pre-scouted at night to map out neon light sources and reflective surfaces. A compact, gimbal-mounted setup allowed fluid movement through crowds. Strategic use of practical light sources -- neon signs, wet pavement reflections, car headlights -- replaced traditional lighting entirely.
Visual approach
High contrast with crushed blacks and lifted highlights in the neon color ranges. Lime green and warm amber dominate, with occasional magenta accents. The handheld quality is intentional, creating an intimate, you-are-here feel while the slow-motion moments add cinematic weight.
The series generated over 8M combined views within the first month. Three of the six spots were repurposed by the brands for paid advertising campaigns, and the series led to recurring contracts with two of the clients.
