The scene
Commissioned by a science museum network, this project aimed to translate complex neuroscience into visceral, accessible visual storytelling. The film bridges real macro photography of biological specimens with AI-enhanced visualizations of neural activity.
The challenge
Accurately representing scientific processes while maintaining cinematic beauty required close collaboration with neuroscientists. Every visual metaphor needed to be both scientifically defensible and emotionally compelling.
The process
Real-world macro footage was captured using specialized probe lenses and UV lighting to reveal fluorescent proteins in brain tissue samples. These practical elements were then extended with AI-generated sequences that imagined neural signals as flowing rivers of bioluminescent light, creating seamless transitions between real and synthetic imagery.
Visual approach
A cool blue-cyan palette dominates, with warm synaptic flashes providing visual punctuation. The camera moves with the fluidity of thought itself: slow, continuous, and occasionally surprising in its shifts of scale from micro to macro.
Installed as a permanent exhibition piece in 4 science museums across Europe. The project won a science communication award and has been used as supplementary educational material in university neuroscience programs.
